1. What to Expect in the First Few Days
Some sensitivity or mild discomfort is completely normal after receiving your temporary veneers.
- You may experience tooth sensitivity or discomfort when biting this typically improves within a few days to two weeks.
- Avoid very hot or icy foods and drinks, as extreme temperatures can increase sensitivity.
- Remember: these are temporary restorations designed to protect your teeth and shape your new smile treat them gently.
2. Keep Your Temporaries Clean
Proper cleaning is essential for gum healing and for preparing your mouth for your final veneers.
- Brush twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Rinse with hydrogen peroxide once or twice daily to keep the area sanitized.
- Apply your prescribed healing gel to your gums three to five times a day, ideally after meals.
- Gently rub a small amount onto the gumline.
- Avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after application to allow full absorption.
Healthy gums are key to a beautiful final result as cleanliness during this stage makes all the difference.
3. Eat Carefully and Protect Your Temporaries
Your temporary veneers are made from plastic materials held with temporary adhesive, so they can be more fragile than your final restorations.
Avoid:
- Hard, crunchy, or chewy foods (nuts, hard bread, caramel, taffy).
- Biting into foods with your front teeth (like apples, sandwiches, or corn on the cob).
Instead: - Use a fork and knife to cut food into small pieces.
- Chew with your back teeth to avoid unnecessary pressure on the temporaries.
If your temporary veneer chips, loosens, or comes off, contact our office immediately so we can repair or replace it. This is not uncommon and does not mean it will happen with your permanent veneers.
4. Protect Your Smile at Night
You’ll be provided with a clear nightguard (retainer) to wear while you sleep.
- Wear it nightly to protect your temporaries from grinding, clenching, or nighttime pressure.
- This helps prevent cracks, chips, or other damage caused by unconscious movement.
5. Avoid Staining Foods and Habits
Temporary veneers are more porous than porcelain, so they can stain easily.
Avoid foods and habits that can discolor your smile:
- Deeply colored foods like berries, tomato sauces, curry, and especially turmeric.
- Chlorhexidine mouth rinses, which can stain the surface of your temporaries.
- Smoking or vaping, which can cause yellowing and delay gum healing.
Stick to mild-colored foods and drinks during this phase as your future smile will thank you!
